The Headwaters drawings activate an interplay between dark and light to convey the character of the Salmon River’s source. Willow branches from a tree that fell in our back alley provide the raw material for inked marks, lines, and washes that interact with the white page to evoke the texture of this layered, animated place. Willows hold river banks together, preventing erosion and providing shade for salmon.
The Currents video collages ten second clips from eight different rivers in the Columbia basin. The stark black and white videos emphasize the riffles, rushing, eddying, rippling motion of river currents at sites of importance to salmon.
